Ugandan MPs at London event on building the political will for social protection

Ugandan MPs including the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda will appear at an event in London on Making the Case for Social Protection.

The event, subtitled In Conversation with Uganda MPs, will inform attendees of social protection developments in Uganda, and the question of how political will can be generated amongst a diverse range of stakeholders.

It will share findings from the implementation of the country's Senior Citizen’s Grant, which was initiated as a pilot in a number of districts with the support from development partners, which is now in the process of being gradually rolled out by government and development partners across the country. This comes as the Government of Uganda's Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development publishes a new report and case studies on the economic impact of the grant.

The event organised by HelpAge, Age International and Development Pathways, will invite attendees' involvement in the next steps for a low-income nation that has introduced inclusive social protection in a number of districts, and is now considering the next steps.

It will include a panel discussion with Hon. Flavia Kabahenda Rwabuhoro, founding Chairperson and Coordinator, Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Social Protection; Charles Knox-Vydmanov, Social Protection Policy Adviser, HelpAge; and Bjorn Gelders, Senior Social Policy Specialist, Development Pathways.
