Conditional Cash Transfer Programmes – Their Relevance For Nepal

Compared to countries with a similar level of economic development, Nepal is doing very well in terms of its commitment to social protection. Programmes such as the Senior Citizens’ Allowance, Single Women’s Allowance, Disability Allowance and the recently introduced Child Protection Grant have the potential to transform lives across Nepal as well as support economic growth.

This discussion paper is the second in a series of papers , an earlier paper discussed the targeting of social protection that aims to fill gaps in the evidence in Nepal. The series aims to situate key debates on social protection within the Nepal and global contexts. DFID hopes that these papers will further strengthen the understanding of policy makers and citizens on the implications of social protection programmes including design issues for the achievement of poverty reduction and broader social development.
