Development Pathways announces the re-launch of a new internship for Black professionals

18/11/2020

We are excited to announce that we have re-launched our internship programme “Pathways into Development” graduate internship programme. Each year, we will be selecting a Black graduate to work alongside our team of experts in our London office. This joint initiative, in partnership with Diasporic Development, is a paid, 12-month training programme for Black graduates who are seeking to enter the international development sector. This training opportunity will provide professional development, mentoring and coaching to enable the successful candidate to establish a solid foundation of relevant knowledge and skills to move on to a career in this sector. The internship programme will provide varied learning opportunities including both formal professional development experiences as well as informal but valuable work experience and shadowing through a network of experienced contacts.

As an international development organisation, Development Pathways recognises that there is a lack of diversity, specifically in regard to Black professionals, working at all levels in our sector. We believe that, in order to address this, there needs to be a diverse pipeline  and to achieve this, we have partnered with Diasporic Development, a UK, Black professional network of International Development practitioners. Founded by five Black women, Diasporic Development recognises the crucial role the Black diaspora should play in shaping international development. Their commitment to promoting diverse workforces, with Black professionals at the forefront of these conversations, make them uniquely placed to support our interns throughout their time at Development Pathways.

The graduate internship programme was announced by Development Pathways’ CEO, Dr. Stephen Kidd and Baindu Kallon at a Diasporic Development’s event on how to start a career in international development. The event, in honour of Black History Month in the UK, featured a fireside chat with Black professionals on their experiences working in the sector.

 Stephen later explained that:

We’re extremely excited to launch this new initiative with Diasporic Development. The internship is part of our ongoing commitment to promoting diversity and supporting the Black Lives Matter initiative, to contribute in a small way to tackling systemic racism in the international development sector. By working alongside our team, the successful candidate will be provided with a springboard to launch their careers.”

It is hoped that this joint initiative will help amplify the voices of Black networks advocating for stronger representation. This training programme is not only an opportunity for professional development but, just as importantly, provides successful candidates with a network of Black professionals as they build their career.

We are now accepting applications for the “Pathways into Development” graduate internship programme. The deadline is 7th December 2020. More information on how to apply can be found here.
